NORTHERN ALLIES is Kevin Emerson, Jon Goff and Ethan Jones.

We play modern music with electric guitars, drums and synthesizers. You may recognize some of us from Central Services, Math and Physics Club, Memphis Radio Kings, Board of Education, Loose Bananas, die Zauberfloaters or any number of other bands we've played in and without.

Our music takes a critical view of the internal as it relates to the external. We deconstruct the emotional and psychological processes that originate in childhood and develop into the culture of adulthood. Having engaged subjects as diverse as ghost ships, taxidermy and modernist architecture, our work reproduces familiar musical signals, arranging them into new conceptually layered pieces.

Often times these themes are combined into songs that feature mundane domestic objects painted blue, juxtaposed with objects, and embellished with stenciled text. The color blue establishes a dream-like surreal quality, suggests notions of calmness and safety, and formally unifies the disparate objects in each song. The words provide clues to content and interpretation. While we use a variety of materials and processes in each project our methodology is consistent. Although there may not always be material similarities between the different projects they are linked by recurring formal concerns and through the subject matter. The subject matter of each body of work determines the materials and the forms of the work. Also we found and re-purposed most of this artist statement.
